Weekly, Bi-Weekly or Monthly: How to Pick a House Cleaning Schedule
The right schedule is the one that matches how fast your home gets messy, not the one that sounds most impressive.

Recurring house cleaning comes in three common rhythms: weekly, bi-weekly and monthly. All three keep a home in better shape than cleaning when it finally bothers you. What differs is how much builds up between visits, and how much of that you're willing to live with. Picking the right one is mostly about being honest about how your household actually runs.
Start with what happens between visits
A cleaner can only reset the house to a clean state. After that, your household takes over. A home with two adults who are out all day behaves very differently from a home with kids, a dog and someone working from the kitchen table. Before you choose a frequency, think about how quickly each of these moves in your home:
- How many people live in the house, and how many are home during the day.
- Whether you have pets that shed or track in dirt.
- How often you cook, and how much of it happens on the stovetop.
- How many bathrooms get daily use.
- How often you host family or friends.
- How much tidying you do yourself between visits.
Weekly: for homes that fill up fast
Weekly cleaning fits households where the kitchen, bathrooms and floors take a beating every few days. Think busy families, homes with pets and anyone who entertains regularly. With a visit every week, nothing has time to harden into buildup. Bathrooms never get far past fresh, floors stay close to clean, and your own weekend tidying drops to almost nothing.
The tradeoff is simply frequency. If your home doesn't really get that messy in seven days, a weekly visit can feel like cleaning something that's still clean.
Bi-weekly: the middle ground
Every two weeks is a common compromise, and for many households it hits the balance. The house gets a full reset twice a month, and the gap is short enough that bathrooms and kitchens don't get out of hand. It works well for couples, smaller families and anyone who keeps up with daily dishes and light tidying on their own.
If you find yourself doing a quick bathroom clean in the second week before the next visit, that's a sign you might benefit from weekly. If you rarely touch anything between visits and the house still looks fine, bi-weekly is probably right.
Monthly: maintenance for lighter households
Monthly cleaning suits homes that stay tidy on their own and mainly need a thorough pass on the things people tend to skip. Smaller households, homes where people travel a lot, and anyone who just had a deep clean and wants to hold that level all fit here.
Be realistic about the longer gap. Four weeks is plenty of time for soap scum, dust and floor grime to build up, so each visit does more work than a weekly one would. That's fine as long as you expect it. If monthly visits keep feeling like they're catching up instead of keeping up, move to bi-weekly.
Start with a deep clean, then settle into your rhythm
Whatever frequency you pick, the first visit sets the baseline. Regular cleaning covers kitchens, bathrooms, dusting, vacuuming, mopping and general surface cleaning, and it works best on a home that's already in decent shape. If the baseboards haven't been touched in a long time or the bathrooms have buildup, starting with a deep clean means every recurring visit after it stays on the surface, where it belongs.
Our Deep Cleaning service is built for exactly that, and it's a good fit for first-time cleanings. After that, switch to a recurring plan. The Deep Cleaning and Regular Cleaning pages under Services explain how each one works.
Account for the season
In the Sacramento Valley, dry summers and open windows tend to bring in extra dust, so some households tighten their schedule in those months and loosen it in the cooler ones. Recurring service doesn't have to be a permanent decision. Ask about adjusting if your needs change, whether that's a new baby, a new dog, a stretch of houseguests or a quiet winter.
A quick way to choose
- Messy within a few days, with kids, pets or heavy kitchen use: weekly.
- Tidy most of the time, with a few busy spots: bi-weekly.
- Light use, few people home, and you want a thorough pass: monthly.
- Not sure: start bi-weekly and move up or down after a couple of visits.
Whichever you choose, picking up before the visit helps. Clearing toys, laundry and papers off surfaces means the time goes into cleaning instead of moving things around.
